An driver's breath alcohol level was almost three times over the drink drive limit the morning after his Christmas work party.
The man, who was stopped at 8am on Friday morning, was one of 14 people arrested for driving under the influence at police checkpoints and through random stops inthe Invercargill area last weekend. His breath alcohol level was 1133mg. He will appear in court on January 19.
"As we come into the festive season, we know people are attending parties and celebrations," Southland Sergeant Deon McNaught said.
"We want to see everyone get home safe this Christmas and it's extremely disappointing that people are driving under the influence.
"Alcohol takes a long time to get out of your system, and you have to be aware that you may still be over the limit the next day and not adequately rested.
"Consider delaying your drive, take alternative transport, or ask a friend to drive you."
McNaught urged drivers not to take the risk if they had any doubt about being legally safe to drive.
"Police will be out in force through the holiday period in the Southland and Central Lakes regions conducting breath-testing checkpoints and random stops.
