Driver lost control of car before crash

A car which rolled and hit a tree head-on south of Auckland at the weekend lost control on a patch of black ice, emergency services say.

A woman, believed to be in her 50s, a teenage girl, and a boy were all injured in the smash near Maramarua Golf Course early on Saturday morning, in which the driver had to be cut out of the wreckage.

The woman and the teenager were taken to Middlemore Hospital by helicopter, while the boy was taken to hospital by ambulance, the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter said.

The crash happened at 6.30am on Saturday, a police spokeswoman said.

The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter had to land on the Maramarua Golf Course to assist at the scene.

Intensive care flight paramedic, Russell Clarke, arrived just after the Fire Service had cut the driver out of the car.

"The two children in the back were outside the vehicle and walking around," he said.

"There were two dogs on the back seat in cages.

"It appears the lady had been travelling to Auckland from Tauranga when the vehicle slipped on black ice and she lost control of it.

"It had crashed onto the golf course and into a tree, causing extensive damage to the front of the vehicle."

The woman was taken to hospital in a serious condition and the teenage girl was in a moderate condition, Auckland Rescue Helicopter said.
