Driver in Karaka crash that killed Constable Naomi McRae named

The driver involved in the Karaka crash that killed an off-duty police officer can now be named.

Russell John Tunnicliffe, 61, has appeared before Judge Winter in the Papakura District Court where this interim name suppression expired today.

He faces charges of careless driving causing death, careless driving causing injury, making a false statement in a logbook and exceeding the maximum period for continuous work while subject to work time restrictions.

Judge Winter remanded Tunnicliffe without plea to appear again in July.

Constable Naomi McRae died following the Linwood Rd crash on February 13.

The 35-year old was airlifted to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition and placed on life support, but later died with family at her side.

A keen runner, she was preparing for the upcoming Boston Marathon in April and had competed in a number of equestrian competitions.

McRae had worked in Counties Manukau since graduating from Police College in 2014.

She had been working in Whāngaia Ngā Pā Harakeke, the family harm team, with vulnerable victims.

After the crash, Counties Manukau District Commander Superintendent Jill Rogers said McRae was well-loved and respected by her colleagues across the district.

"Naomi's tragic passing has deeply affected a number of staff and friends in the police whānau."
