A courier truck driver has admitted a careless driving causing injury charge after backing into a young mother, leaving her leg "practically severed".
Shaymvedh's CourierPost truck pinned Grey Lynn mother-of-two Preeya Patel against a wall in Auckland's Richmond Rd in February.
Mrs Patel's leg was badly injured in what onewitness described as an "absolutely horrid" scene.
In the Auckland District Court today Shaymvedh, 58, admitted a charge of careless and inconsiderate driving causing injury.
He will be sentenced next month and faces a maximum penalty of three months' jail or a $4500 fine as well as a mandatory loss of his driver's licence for six months.
At the time witnesses told APNZ Mrs Patel was running down Richmond Rd in Grey Lynn about 10.30am on February 16 when the truck began reversing towards her with its back tray down. The tray pinned her against a wall.
"I heard screaming and then I heard 'help, help, help'... we ran over and there was a girl, she was up against the wall and her leg was practically severed," said a woman who was on her way to brunch with her sister.
"She was crying out for her babies and was crying out, 'I'm dying, I'm dying' and my sister said to her 'no, you're not dying sweetheart, you're in shock'.
"Obviously she wasn't feeling any pain and then she just sort of went calm and I was like, oh my God, she's gone."
