As the Black Caps' Doug Bracewell mounted a campaign of annihilation at Bellerive Oval in Hobart, Masterton's Doug Bracewell rushed home early to watch cricket history being made.
He arrived home in time to catch the end of a top spell of pace bowling by his young nephew and namesake, who captured six Australian wickets for 40 runs to clinch a surprise comeback win for the Black Caps.
Doug Bracewell snr, a sports co-ordinator and former first class cricketer, was over the moon with the win and "young Doug's" amazing contribution.
The Black Cap - son of former Wairarapa and New Zealand cricketer Brendon Bracewell - may have become the toast of the country after his star turn, but his uncle's response was simply: "He's a good kid.
"I've just spoken with his dad and he told him this morning: 'Dougie, two inspirational overs will change this game', and that's exactly what happened," Doug snr said.
"He's got a good attitude and it's that aspect of him that we're really proud of."
The Bracewell name is synonymous with cricket in Wairarapa, although Doug Bracewell snr works for the Wairarapa-Bush Rugby Union. His brother John Bracewell was also a former New Zealand test cricketer.
Also contributing to yesterday's historic win by the Black Caps was captain Ross Taylor from Masterton, while another Wairarapa son, Jesse Ryder, caught Peter Siddle off the bowling of Tim Southee.
