Double take for Auckland man who pulls victim out of car crash second time in just over a year

An Auckland resident who pulled a man from a car wreck last year appears to have been in the right place at the right time again.

Ashish Bakshi, 26, helped an injured victim from a road accident for the second time in just over a year.

The Z petrol station worker watched as a car collided into the driver's side of another vehicle last night on Great South Rd, Penrose.

Bakshi said he was on his way to pick up a friend when he saw the collision happen.

"I had my windows down and I heard a big banging noise ... I was just very shocked."

He said a car with a young male and female inside had collided into another car driven by a female. He guessed both parties were in their late twenties.

Bakshi said his immediate reaction was to help as much as he could.

"I thought it was important to help the situation for humanity's sake."

He said the couple "seemed to be okay" because they got out of their car, but the woman in the other vehicle hadn't moved.

"I went over to ask if she was alright, and she told me she was sore in her neck."

The 26-year-old said he was nervous the woman's legs could be damaged, as the car door was "totally crushed inside".

"I tried to open her door, but it was so damaged ... I opened the other side but it was very hard for her to get out."

Bakshi said he offered to hold her as she climbed out.

"Then she just sat on the ground, she was so shocked."

The Z worker said he couldn't believe he had seen another crash again, but both times his first thought had been to look after those involved.

In September last year Bakshi had just arrived home from work when he heard a head-on crash.

He helped an unconscious man to safety by breaking the door and pulling him out.

"The first [crash] is still on my mind. I was just feeling so shocked, because all the memories started coming back to me."

Bakshi said he doesn't want any thank yous. The 26-year-old just wants to share his experiences to ensure others take care on the road.

"[I want] to warn people to drive slow and safe especially in this holiday Christmas period. We can't afford any more accidents."

A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said they responded to a call out to the crash at 9.45pm.

"There were two patients with minor injuries and one with moderate."

The patient with moderate injuries was transported to Auckland hospital.

A police spokeswoman confirmed police attended the crash, however added that it was currently under investigation, so no information could be given on the cause or those involved.
