Double fatal crash near Marsden Pt in Northland.

Two people have died after a crash between a petrol tanker and car near Marsden Pt in Northland.

The crash happened about 12.10pm near the intersection of Port Marsden Highway and Marsden Bay Drive.

The road remained blocked to the public as grieving family were comforted by emergency services behind the cordon.

A reporter at the scene said there were at least nine police cars among the emergency services working on the road under steady rain.

They were trying to clear the road with a couple of tow trucks, he said.

A helicopter had flown in and out of the scene.

A police spokesperson said the Marsden Point Road would remain closed for some time and the Serious Crash Unit remained at the scene.

Police have reopened SH1 in Oakleigh, which had diversions in place for a short time, following a separate crash where minor injuries were reported.

An unmarked police car had also collided with another vehicle, injuring two police officers and the driver of the other car.

The second crash had blocked State Highway 1 about 500m north of the Mangapai intersection.
