The week-long plight of two dogs, trapped day and night in a parked car in Central Auckland, has ended with their removal by the SPCA.
A large mastiff-cross and a corgi-cross have been rescued by SPCA inspector John Heremaia from a car in Darby St after complaints from the
public
"It's not an ideal situation and the dogs are barking at passersby," Mr Heremaia said.
The dogs' owner, Jill Crosland, was pleased the SPCA had intervened.
She was staying at an Auckland backpackers hostel, and said it was a difficult situation.
"I tried my hardest to please everyone ... this will make things easier because I've got nowhere to keep them."
The dogs had not been mistreated, she said.
Nathan Beale, who works in the area, disagreed.
He said the dogs had been in the car since last Tuesday, and were left barking all day with no water and a "couple of Tux biscuits".
"Everybody grabbed water bottles and we put water through the gap in the window so they could at least drink," he said.
Mr Beale said he had wondered if one of the dogs had to die before something was done.
Ms Crosland is expected to collect the dogs tomorrow for the drive back to Wellington.
