DoC tags trout

The Department of Conservation will surgically implant radio tags in 100 rainbow trout in the Tongariro River to track their progress to spawning grounds upstream.

The river is the most important trout breeding tributary of Lake Taupo and over the winter spawning period anglers catch around 20,000 trout there.

DoC said the project would help to estimate how many trout run up the river each year. The information would be used when setting fishing regulations to ensure the fishery's sustainability.
