Police divers will today join the search for missing Christchurch taxi driver John Mackle, who has not been seen since last Wednesday.

Mr Mackle, 50, has been missing from his home in the Christchurch suburb of Opawa since around 11pm on December 11.

His Gold Band taxi, a white 2008 Toyota Camry, registration number ELQ718, was found near Walter Park in Kellys Road, Mairehau, a day later.

Police and search and rescue volunteers have been searching for the missing man in the Mairehau area.

Today, the Wellington-based Police National Dive Squad will be searching a drainage creek and pond alongside Water Park between Kellys Road and East Ellington Drive.

"An initial search of the creek has already been undertaken," Detective Sergeant Richard Quested said.

"But to complete a safe and thorough search of the pond, which is several feet deep, it is appropriate to use the dive squad."

Mr Quested said police remain confident there was no indication of foul play in Mr Mackle's disappearance.

"We are continuing to call for any information from the public that may assist in locating Mr Mackle, including any sightings of his taxi on Wednesday night, December 11 or the early hours of Thursday, December 12."
