Diver dies after accident north of Gisborne

A diver has died this morning after an accident north of Gisborne.

The alarm was raised at Anaura Bay just before 9.50am.

An ambulance spokeswoman said the diver was initially found unconscious, and then suffered a cardiac arrest.

Police said he surfaced from a dive and collapsed after getting out of the water.

"Despite the efforts of the fire service and ambulance he could not be revived."

The case has been referred to a coroner.
