Christchurch ratepayers who remain without council services will be eligible for discounted rates.
Mayor Bob Parker yesterday announced a rates relief package of a 40 per cent discount for residential homeowners and 30 per cent for commercial property owners, The Press reported.
The package will cost $1.4 million over three years - down from the original $2.4 million estimated before the package was scaled back to reflect the real cost of services damaged properties were missing out on.
Mayor Bob Parker said spending had to be kept under control as "one person's rates relief is another person's rates increase".
