Diplomats head home to discuss MFAT cuts

An expensive two-day meeting begins today as diplomats come home from around the world to discuss proposed changes at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

A letter signed by 49 diplomats arguing against the razor gang approach being taken to the ministry was handed to the government last week.

Former National minister John Carter, now the High Commissioner to the Cook Islands is one of the heads of mission attending the meeting, which is estimated to cost about $200,000.

Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully last night refused to comment on today's meeting, but he has made it clear that he thinks some of the proposals, which include cutting overseas allowances, go too far.
