Diesel spill disrupts traffic

Motorists are being warned to expect long delays after a diesel spill north of Wellington this afternoon forced the closure of two lanes and caused traffic backlogs.

The diesel spilled from a truck on State Highway 1 at Ngauranga Gorge about 2.30pm, the New Zealand Transport Agency reported.

Wellington Operations Manager Mark Owen said the motorway was cut to one lane as sand was applied to the spill.

The situation was creating long queues of traffic back towards the city.
