Delays as new railway station begins operating

There is disappointment about the delays and disruption on the very first day Auckland's new $35 million Newmarket Railway Station began operating.

The station was five years in the planning and has taken two years to construct.

However, signalling problems meant the first train from Britomart to Newmarket, due to leave at 5.23 this morning, was delayed by nearly an hour.

Instead of the journey taking seven minutes it took nearly half an hour. The train was forced to stop for 20 minutes on the Parnell overbridge because a compulsory stop sign was still up.

Newmarket Business Association head Cameron Brewer says such delays do nothing to get Aucklanders out of their cars.
