Tempers flared over the rights of landowners at a meeting to discuss damage to Kina Cliffs in the Tasman District.
Hosted by Friends of Kina Cliffs, the meeting became heated after property owner Alan Trent was asked to speak.
Debate has raged since the United States businessman decided to fell trees on
land he owns at the cliffs. He has also proposed a housing development on 200ha of land he owns near Tasman.
Mr Trent said he was aware of concern about the removal of pine trees and excavation work, but a replanting project was going on that would retain the landscape.
Kina Cliffs group member Barry James said photographs taken after heavy rain in June showed slumping on the cliffs below Mr Trent's property.
Members of the Kina Cliffs group also met council staff to discuss options.
