Police have named the man who died following a fall on the Gunn Ridge Track near Whataroa on Friday as Nicolaj Brun.

Bru, 26, was from Denmark and had been living in Christchurch.

Brun died after slipping from a ridge line while on a hunting trip with a friend.

He was killed in the fall, a polive statement said.

"His partner went for assistance and was rescued by police.''

The dead man's friend is now being supported by Victim Support.

The death has been referred to the Coroner.
