He was wearing a cycle helmet at the time but was unconscious when passersby went to his aid.
The cyclist was taken to hospital with a suspected broken arm after being placed onto a back-safety board, Mr Irving said. "We believe he has ridden into the curb ... he hasn't been concentrating and has hit the island."
Meanwhile, it was a busy night for the Life Flight rescue helicopter crew with callouts from the north to the south of Wairarapa.
Life Flight crewman Dave Greenburg said they went out to Mataikona around 8pm to help an elderly woman who was having breathing difficulties.
They flew the woman, in her 60s, to Wairarapa Hospital.
Later, a woman from Wellington was injured in a quad bike accident at Lake Ferry just before 10pm.
"Wellington Free Ambulance attended the scene and we were called because they were concerned about her head injuries," said Mr Greenburg.
Life Flight met the ambulance in Martinborough and flew the woman, in her 30s, to Wellington Hospital.
The woman was released on Sunday.
Mr Greenburg was not sure how the accident happened as they did not attend the scene.
