Cyclist dies in Gisborne crash

A male cyclist died in a crash involving a truck on Awapuni Rd near the Gisborne speedway this morning.

State Highway 35 was closed for three hours after the 9am crash.

The cyclist died at the scene.

A motorist who passed the crash soon after it happened, told the Gisborne Herald he was in shock from what he saw.

Police closed SH35 at Pacific St and the Aerodrome Rd corner.

Family of the dead man also arrived at the scene.

The serious crash unit is investigating.

A detour is in place through Makaraka on the main road and then into Lytton Rd, but it was not suitable for all heavy vehicles.
