The Herald looked into how much it would have cost travellers to venture out of the city in light of the price cuts.
Based on New Zealand's most popular car model, the Toyota Corolla, the Herald calculated how much it would cost to travel to six North Island destinations with petrol costing 49 cents a litre.
If driving a manual 2015 Toyota Corolla, with a fuel consumption of 6.7L per 100kms, travellers could have got all the way from the Wiri Gull station to Hamilton for just $3.51, to Whangarei for $5.97 and all the way down to Wellington for $20.51.
According to GlobalPetrolPrices.com the average gasoline price per litre yesterday was $2.16 - more than four times the sale price.
If commuters had travelled to the same three places, without the discounted petrol, they would have paid $15.48 to get to Hamilton, $26.33 to Whangarei and $90.45 to Wellington.
The Gull station on Roscommon Rd was selling petrol for 49c a litre yesterday.
