GREYTOWN completed a clean sweep of the major trophies up for grabs in Wairarapa Cricket's senior men's interclub competition this season when they scored a six-wicket victory over Red Star in the Bidwill Cup final played at Queen Elizabeth Park oval in Masterton on Saturday and Sunday.

Having previously won both the Umpires Cup one-day series and The Rock Twenty20 competition, Greytown's greater depth in the batting department was the main catalyst to victory on this occasion.

On a pitch with a variable bounce that was always likely to favour ball over bat Red Star were able to muster just 135 in their first innings. Daniel Stoneley top scored with 38 and Troy Burling's 32 was the only other contribution of note.

The medium pacers spearheaded the Greytown attack, Daniel Ingham taking 4-40 off 18 overs, Brian James 3-33 from 12 overs and Anthony Butterfield 2-19 off 11 overs.

Greytown's first innings could hardly have got off to a worse start with three wickets down and only nine runs on the board. However, the middle order came to the party with Tim Boyer (35), Robbie Speers (24), Gordon Reisima (21) and Daniel Ingham (48) getting them through to a valuable 36-run lead. Ingham's knock illustrated just how difficult it was to score quick runs. Usually a free-goer he faced 155 deliveries and struck only five boundaries.

Outstanding at the bowling crease for Red Star was Jared Watt. He put down 31 overs, 14 of which were maidens, and finished with figures of 7-36. His fellow medium pacer Peter Sigvertsen also had a heavy workload. His 28 overs cost 54 runs and he claimed one scalp.

Red Star were positive in their intent in their second innings but again they struggled to get any worthwhile partnerships going and were all out for 106 in 25.2 overs.

Opener Anthony Sprowson made a handy 29 and Robbie Anderson scored at almost a run a ball in getting through to 27. Bowling for Greytown, Tim Boyer with 3-30 from nine overs and Gordon Reisima with 3-16 from three overs did the bulk of the damage.

Needing 71 runs for the outright win Greytown lost four wickets in achieving their target. At 48/4 they still had some work to do but Boyer (22 not out) and Cole Freeman (12 not out) ensured they had another trophy to celebrate.

Again it was Jared Watt who starred with the ball for Red Star. His 3-31 from 9.5 overs gave him 10 wickets for the final and the player of the match award.

Wairarapa Cricket's end-of-season presentation function followed the Bidwill Cup final and Lansdowne skipper Stefan Hook-Sporry was named Player of the Year.

He also won the trophy for the most club wickets in senior competition play while the award for the most runs went to Greytown's Robbie Speers. The Sprit of Cricket award was won by Daniel Ingham (Greytown) and the Best and Fairest team award went to Red Star. Holders of the Bidwill Challenge Cup are Lansdowne.
