The Herald is limited in what it can report about why the inmate is imprisoned due to restrictions ordered by the judge.
Court documents state the defendant is currently accused of having sexually violated a woman in Onehunga in June 1988. The charge came about after the woman went to police, which prompted authorities to test material from a medical exam from the era.
If convicted of the charge, he could face a sentence of up to 20 years’ imprisonment.
