Helensville lockdown: Police take two into custody and seize firearm

Two people have been taken into custody after schools were put into lockdown in Helensville.

A police spokesperson said they were called to an address on Koraha Rd, Kumeū, about 1.45pm after reports of a man pointing a gun at the occupants.

The man had fled upon police arrival, but further inquiries were made and a location of interest was identified on Garfield Rd, Helensville.

The spokesperson said the Eagle helicopter was deployed overhead and monitored the situation. Two people from the Helensville address were taken into custody and a firearm was recovered.

Schools near the police activity were put into lockdown and online reports suggest these were Helensville Primary School and Kaipara College.

The lockdowns were lifted just after 3pm and students have been able to leave without issue.

A police spokesperson said inquiries were ongoing to establish the circumstances of the incident.
