Bomb threat triggers lockdown at Manawatū Prison

Manawatū Prison is out of lockdown after a search triggered by a bomb threat earlier today.

Shane Petersen, deputy general manager of Manawatū Prison, said the lockdown was a precaution after a threatening phone call was made to police.

“Just before 9am, police notified the prison that a person had called them to suggest a bomb was on site at the prison,” Petersen said.

“The prison was immediately locked down for searches to be conducted.”

Petersen said the prison was now operating normally.

“Police conducted an extensive search of the site,” Petersen said, “and no bomb was located.

“We will assist police with any further enquiries.”

Petersen also acknowledged the professional response from frontline staff and emergency services.

Earlier, he had said: “The safety and security of the prison is our priority. We take threats to the operation and security of our facilities very seriously and have detailed protocols for dealing with incidents of this nature”.

A police spokesperson said they received a call about 8.40am reporting a threat.

This is not the first time Manawatū Prison has faced a bomb threat.

In 2015, police attended the prison to investigate the threat, but did not find a bomb.
