Cricket veteran Snedden dies

Former New Zealand cricketer and sports broadcaster Colin Snedden died in his sleep at the weekend, aged 93.

Auckland-born Mr Snedden played in one test, against England in Christchurch in March 1947. He bowled 16 overs, but the third and fourth days were washed out and the match was abandoned as a draw.

Following his retirement from cricket, Mr Snedden was a radio cricket and rugby commentator for many years, for which he was made a life member of the New Zealand Sports Journalists Awards in 2007.

He came from a family of cricketers - his father, Nessie, and brother Warwick both played first-class cricket. His nephew Martin Snedden - chief executive of Rugby New Zealand 2011, the World Cup organisers - played in 25 tests and 93 one-day internationals.
