Meanwhile, traffic heading south on Auckland's motorways was crawling.
On the Northern motorway, southbound traffic was crawling from Esmonde Rd to the Harbour Bridge and traffic on Lake Rd was heavy.
Traffic signals said there was an "incident", with the speed limit reduced to 70km/h on the three open lanes on the Harbour Bridge.
It was flowing freely again after the bridge.
Further south, a broken-down truck had blocked the left two lanes of the Southern Motorway heading south just before the Khyber Pass on-ramp. While it had since been cleared, traffic remained heavy.
The New Zealand Transport Agency warned motorists to expect delays.
