Crash damages Masterton neighbour's garden

A 79-year-old Masterton woman rushing her husband to hospital lost control of her car and ended up in a neighbour's garden in the early hours of Sunday, police say.

Masterton police Acting Sergeant Serena Collins said no other cars were involved in the 1.30am incident, and the two involved did not appear to have any injuries but were taken to Wairarapa Hospital for assessment.

Steve Brackenbury, who lives nearby, said he and partner Leigh Feast were having a quick nap before the rugby when they heard a "boy racer noise".

"It was like wheelies, but we didn't think anything of it, until we heard someone yelling help."

Mr Brackenbury said they walked down the road to see their elderly neighbours had lost control of their car coming out of the driveway and landed in another neighbour's garden.

"They were in a bit of shock. We went and got them a couple of blankets."

He said a police patrol had been in the area and had come across the incident soon after it happened and paramedics and firefighters were also on the scene shortly afterward.

It is understood the two elderly victims were taken to Wairarapa Hospital and were discharged by midday yesterday. Mr Brackenbury said he was not sure exactly why the woman had been taking her husband to hospital but he understood he had "taken a turn".

The neighbour whose property the couple crashed into did not want to be named, but he said he slept through the whole event but saw in the morning they had narrowly missed a car parked in front of his property.

"It could have been worse, and it must have been very upsetting for them," he said.

The couple driving the crashed car would not comment.

Meanwhile, In a second car crash overnight Saturday, two drivers had a lucky escape after a near head-on south of Greytown.

Greytown fire chief Harry Howard said fire, ambulance and police were called to the crash near the Greytown cemetery on Tauherenikau Rd just after midnight.

He said both cars were written off, with damage down the passenger side of each of them.

"It was a glancing blow. It was quite lucky or skills from the drivers, because a couple of inches in each direction and it would've been a head-on."

He said the two drivers, a man and woman, were assessed by paramedics at the scene but not taken to hospital.

There were no passengers in either of the cars.
