Counties-Manukau next to get new speed cameras

New speed cameras are on their way for high-crash areas in Counties-Manukau.
Awhitu Rd in Karioitahi and Glenbrook Rd, Kingseat, are among 33 sites across the country where speed cameras will be installed in an effort to slow drivers and reduce deaths and injuries. The cameras are being placed in high crash risk areas identified by independent traffic experts, says operations manager road policing inspector, Peter McKennie.

He says international evidence showed cameras can slow people down.

"This is why we are working to place safe speed cameras at this and other
sites, to encourage people to reduce their mean speeds which, when coupled
with road safety improvements and other measures, helps to reduce deaths and
injuries," McKennie says.

Site works for the 33 sites were announced in May this year, and represent the third phase of the $10m static camera expansion programme announced in July 2013.

Work to install the first poles that will eventually hold the cameras began early this month, and the poles for the Awhitu Rd and Glenbrook Rd sites will be put in soon.
