A couch has been set on fire in the middle of a north Dunedin Street this morning.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand were called at 2.25am about a couch fire on George St in North Dunedin, an area popular for student housing.

It is orientation week for students at the University of Otago.

The fire was outside a residential property and several vehicles were nearby.

A Fire and Emergency spokesman said one fire engine put out the fire.

Police drove by but did not attend the call.
