Coromandel pohutukawa saved from chop

Some of the 58 pohutukawa trees destined for the chop in Coromandel may have been saved following a public meeting with Transit NZ.

About 150 Coromandel residents gathered at Tapu yesterday for a meeting over the tree's future.

Transit NZ wants to remove the ancient pohutukawa along a 1.5km stretch of SH25 to make the narrow and winding coastal road safer.

However, following yesterday's meeting Green Party Co-leader Jeanette Fitzsimons said she was confident the majority of the trees would be saved.
