Cops promise investigation into how suspect escaped

Police are promising an investigation into how a man escaped their custody late yesterday afternoon.

Brett Makiri escaped from Auckland Central Police Station on Cook Street, after being arrested in relation to kidnapping and assault.

He was wearing a dark shirt, knee-length shorts and white shoes.

Detective Inspector Karyn Malthus says the focus is on recapturing the potentially dangerous 23-year-old.

But she says they also want to know how the escape happened, to prevent it from happening again.

A police spokesperson says he is dangerous and the public shouldn't help him hitchhike or escape.
