The Parole Board last night issued an interim order to recall Thomas to prison for breaching his parole conditions.
Earlier last night, Detective Inspector Bruce Scott of Waitemata police said it was important they located Thomas as soon as possible as he was considered dangerous and should not be approached by members of the public.
"All police staff were made aware last evening of his most recent activities and have been advised to take extreme caution if they encounter him."
Mr Scott said Thomas was understood to have been frequenting several Auckland addresses and it was possible he was using a silver BMW car.
At his High Court murder trial in 2002, the jury was told Thomas, then a 24-year-old barber, shot Michael Coffin in the back of the head the previous year.
He then buried the 21-year-old chef's body beneath a house in Browns Bay on Auckland's North Shore.
The Crown said the motive was to rob the dead man of two ounces of cocaine worth $14,000 to $16,000.
