Condition of boy rescued from pool improving

The condition of a 10-year-old boy who was pulled out of a west Auckland swimming pool yesterday has improved.

The boy got into trouble when he was swimming at the West Wave Aquatic Centre in Henderson and lifeguards pulled him out.

They had already started CPR on the youngster when medical staff arrived. Pool users applauded when it appeared the boy would live.

He was taken to Starship children's hospital where his condition was upgraded from serious to stable overnight, a hospital spokesman said.

He would likely be transferred Middlemore Hospital in south Auckland later today so he could be closer to his home.

West Wave centre manager Kate Meacham said staff were quick to act when they realised someone was in trouble.

"It is a very busy time of the year and our lifeguards are trained to deal with situations such as this.

"Other pool users were extremely helpful and ensured we were able to deal with the matter swiftly and take care of the child until emergency services arrived."
