Concert advice: be patient, go early

Travel early and be patient - that's the advice for those getting ready to attend the final Big Day Out at Mt Smart Stadium today.

Extra trains and buses will travel to and from Penrose to cater for the thousands of people expected at the festival.

Special services will run from Waitakere, Britomart, Papakura and Onehunga, including some trains that will go directly to Penrose station.

Special event buses have also been organised to run from various spots in downtown Auckland and a NiteRider bus service will operate after the event, bringing fans back into town.

Those with Big Day Out tickets, however, should know that free travel is not included in the price, so make sure you have change.

Auckland Transport public transport operations manager Mark Lambert said people would need to be patient, as buses and trains would be very popular with those heading to the stadium.

"Trains will be busy with regular passengers and festival goers, particularly in the late morning, so we encourage everyone to be patient and check the timetable."

Mr Lambert warned that drunks would not be allowed on board. He also had advice for those wanting to go home on a train:

"Train passengers should consider pre-purchasing their return ticket, as people with tickets will get priority queuing at Penrose station. Large numbers will want to get on public transport, so again, people should expect some time waiting."
