Wairarapa drag enthusiasts have not ruled out the idea of co-operating with a Levin club to build a new drag slip.
The Levin Tararua Rodders club have been forced to drop plans to build a $1.5 million drag strip on a reserve at Foxton after fierce opposition from locals and the
refusal of a farmer to sell adjoining land.
Masterton drag-racing events organiser Bob Wilton said the Wairarapa club had been liaising with the Horowhenua club over the plan to build a 50,000sq m international drag strip on Target Reserve.
Now that proposal has fallen through Mr Wilton said he would not rule out the possibility of a combined club plan to build a strip.
"Obviously we would prefer it to be this side of the mountains," he said. Local dragsters have run into problems holding their meetings at the Hood Aerodrome with complaints they interfere with airborne rescue missions to Wairarapa.
Masterton Mayor Bob Francis has talked in the past about the desirability of finding an alternative venue for drag racing in the long term.
