Weekend rain brought familiar flooding for Cockburn Street residents.
Masterton District Council's $450,000 sewerage upgrade began on June 18 after decades of flooding problems that forced a resident to hire a portable toilet last winter.
Juliet Curtis has lived on Cockburn Street for two years and says every time it rains her
backyard is awash.
"We didn't have a lot of rain in the weekend but even still the backyard is unusable again. We only have to have a bit of drizzle and there's a massive puddle."
The mud and stench from under the house was unbearable last winter and hopefully that will be fixed, she said.
"It was horrendous last winter. I just didn't even go in the backyard. I have a beautiful big section for my son and two dogs but half the time I just can't even let them outside because of the mud."
Ms Curtis said her neighbour had to hire a portable toilet because of the sewerage blocks caused by constant flooding last year.
"Thank God we didn't have to do that but really we're not going to know until next winter whether the problem has been fixed. It will just be a waiting game."
The council has told residents the work will be finished by September at which point "it would be nice to have my backyard again", she said.
Levin Bobcats has been contracted to do the work and site manager Carl Philpott said the residents have been really brilliant and understanding.
"We're installing the last man-hole and all the sewer mains are in now. We just have to do all the house connections."
The sewer laterals have been replaced from property boundaries out to the mains, he said.
