Volunteers at the Red Star Cricket club in Wairarapa have helped win the organisation a $1000 Lotto Sport Makers award.
The award is part of the Thank a Sport Maker campaign, which is a partnership between the Lotto Volunteer Foundation and Sport New Zealand that will share out over $1million of quality clothing and sports gear in the greater Wellington region over the next three years.
Sport Wellington celebrates good practice at a local or regional level by rewarding organisations who have demonstrated processes, policies and culture that support sustainability and growth - with a particular focus on volunteer, or Sport Makers, management.
The club will receive $1000 worth of 'Sport Makers' merchandise as part of the campaign.
Red Star Cricket has made dramatic improvements to their volunteer approach over the past 18 months through the hard work of those on the club committee to earn this accolade, says community sport advisor Mark Curr.
"Basically, this year we have seen Red Star write a plan, work to their plan and reap the rewards, it is important that we have clubs like Red Star getting behind their volunteers."
Junior club captain Simon Roseingrave is a finalist in the volunteer category of a Wellington Sportsperson of the Year awards, organised by Sport Wellington.
Cricket development officer Sammy Curtis said the Wairarapa Cricket Association was delighted with the progress of the Red Star club.
"What is great about Red Star, is that they are firmly focused upon creating opportunities and having fun - clearly all of the club volunteers buy in to this and its growing the club."
The work of club junior co-ordinator Simon Roseingrave had been remarkable and improvements to the volunteer environment at Red Star Cricket continue to be consistent and has helped add three new coaches to its roster.
