A climber is dead after a fall in Aoraki-Mt Cook National Park today.
The body was located at 10.45am and a recovery operation was now under way, Twizel police said.
One of an international party of four climbers had alerted rescue services, via mountain radio, at 8.30am that one of their party
had fallen on the east face of Aoraki-Mt Cook, Constable Brett Simon said.
A mountain search and rescue team and a helicopter was called out.
The body of the climber, who has not yet been named, was found at 2590m.
The death is the 10th in the national park in the last four months.
A 27-year-old Romanian man died on Mt Cook last month after falling 200m from the Upper Linda Glacier.
Two New Zealanders and two Australians died in an avalanche on Mt Tasman on December 31.
Four Latvian climbers were killed on Mt Cook in early December.
