Waimakariri fire: Two helicopters tackle flare-up near Eyrewell

Two helicopters have been sent to tackle a flare-up at a large vegetation fire that has reignited in Waimakariri, north of Christchurch.

Crews were called shortly after 5am to Poyntzs Rd in Eyrewell, where gorse caught fire yesterday in high winds and has since reignited.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said winds remained strong and the blaze was still uncontained.

Meanwhile, firefighters are continuing to dampen hotspots at a separate fire in Broomfield, North Canterbury, that killed livestock yesterday.

Five fire crews and two helicopters fought the out-of-control vegetation fire after a burn pile near Broomfield ignited a paddock and nearby hedge.

Fire and Emergency crews from Amberley, Pines Beach, Waipara, Woodend and Hurunui attended.

Canterbury experienced temperatures in the high 20s throughout the weekend, with strong and gusty northwesterly winds.
