An eagle-eyed Facebook Marketplace user has helped police track down a suspected burglar after spotting their own stolen tools for sale on the site.
The tools, which had been reported stolen in January, were listed on Facebook Marketplace, prompting the victim to arrange a meeting with the seller.
Afterviewing the items and recognising their own engraving, the victim left and discreetly snapped a photo of the alleged offender to pass on to police.
Acting Superintendent Ash Tabb, Christchurch Metro acting area commander, said police then executed a search warrant at the property, where the tools were located and returned to the victim.
“A further three bags and crate of tools were seized for officers to evaluate whether they were stolen,” Tabb said.
A firearm was also located and seized from the roof space.
A 33-year-old man will appear in the Christchurch District Court tomorrow on a range of charges including receiving stolen property, unlawfully possessing a firearm and drugs charges.
Police advised engraving tools and storing them away out of sight.
