Find out which Christchurch services are working and which are not, following Saturday's 7.1 magnitude quake and this morning's violent 5.1 aftershock.

Visit the Canterbury Earthquake website for updates

Water, sewage and power
Pockets of electricity, water and sewerage systems remain out. Health concerns remained focused on water supply.

The 0800 Government helpline (0800 779 997) remains activated with some 6900 calls received by 7am today.

Telecommunications
Cellphone networks are all up and running, but both Telecom
and Vodafone request callers restrict their use to voice and data (no images or videos), to not place too much of a strain on the network.

Telecom's payphones in the area are still free for mobile, local and national calls. And 13 wi-fi 'hotspots' have been set up in the city for free internet use.

The 111 emergency service was fully available. Telecom said its land line and cellular networks were all performing well.

Schools

Because of the aftershocks, all schools and early childhood centres in Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri districts are closed today.

Civil Defence advise some Christchurch schools may open by tomorrow.

Individual Boards of Trustees are to consider the safety of their school when deciding whether to reopen.

Canterbury University

Canterbury University has decided to delay its progressive recall of staff by 24 hours to allow confirmation of building status.

The university was badly damaged during Saturday's 7.1 quake.

Public transport - rail

Passenger rail services are all running after a delay this morning for line checks.

KiwiRail spokesman Kevin Ramshaw said trains were stopped after this morning's aftershocks.

Mr Ramshaw said two South Island-based passenger trains were scheduled to run today for the first time since Saturday's quake.

The TranzCoastal service would now arrive late in Picton after being stopped just north of Rangiora by an aftershock.

The Greymouth-bound TranzAlpine which had been scheduled to leave Christchurch at 8.15am had been replaced by buses.

He said freight services are unlikely to be affected.

Shopping Malls

Three shopping malls have been closed in Christchurch following this morning's big aftershock.

The shallow quake which measured 5.1 on the Richter scale struck just before eight this morning.

It's understood The Palms, Eastgate and Northlands have all closed their doors while they're assessed for damage.

Supermarkets

Three Countdown supermarkets in the Christchurch region have closed following the aftershock that struck the region earlier this morning.

The closed stores are Colombo St, Ferrymead and the Palms.

The other nine Countdown supermarkets in the region suffered minor stock damage and are open and operational.

Christchurch Hospital

Christchurch Hospital has cancelled all outpatient clinic appointments today because it says people are not keen on leaving their homes after this morning's aftershocks.

Hospital staff have attempted to contact affected patients.

Tomorrow's appointments will proceed for those able to make it in, others will be rescheduled.

Hornby community cafe, Diamond Harbour drop in centre

A free community cafe has been set up in the Christchurch suburb of Hornby.

The cafe will be open during the day at the Hornby Presbyterian Community Church.

On the other side of the city, the Parklands Baptist Church is opening its doors for people to have a cup of tea and chat if they are feeling frightened.

Civil Defence have opened a drop in centre at the Diamond Harbour Fire Station on the Akaroa peninsula, there is also a soup kitchen being organized at the local church hall.

Churches

St John's Church, Hororata, near the epicentre of the earthquake, is perhaps the worst-damaged church building.

In the central city, St John the Baptist, Latimer Square, has had damage to its bell tower.

St Luke's in the City has lost brick from a number of its window peaks.

Other churches further out have also been affected. The Anglican and Catholic cathedrals appear to have survived extremely well.

Christ's College has come through very well - past work strengthening the buildings has been remarkably successful. The chapel appears unscathed.
