An 11-month-old child has died in a drowning incident at a private address just outside Christchurch.
Emergency services attended the incident in Rolleston, Canterbury, around 4pm today.
A police spokesperson said the child had reportedly fallen into a water race before being found a short-time later by relatives.
"The 11-month-old child was taken to hospital in a critical condition but later died," the spokesperson said.
Earlier, St John spokeswoman Ngaire Jones said an ambulance was called to the Rolleston scene.
The child was taken to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition, Jones said.
