Two teenage men were arrested after being accused of burglary, stealing a car, crashing into multiple residential properties, driving down a walkway and fleeing on foot into a school.
The men, aged 18 and 19, triggered a police pursuit from Avondale, where the pandemonium started, to Mangere, at least 15kmaway.
Counties Manukau police said officers tried stopping the alleged burglars in Avondale but the driver failed to stop.
The police deployed the Eagle helicopter to chase the men, so patrol cars could "withdraw from a pursuit on the road and reduce further risk to the public."
The car was allegedly crashed through several residential properties before the driver took it down a walkway near Viscount School, Mangere.
"Upon arrival of a Police dog unit, the two offenders decamped from the stolen car and fled into Viscount School grounds where they were both arrested," Counties Manukau Police said in a statement.
In the statement, Inspector Shawn Rutene the "manner of recklessness and disregard for public safety" the two men showed was of concern.
"It's disappointing to see this level of offending where this driver has shown no regard for the safety of other road users or pedestrians," he added.
