The Masterton Golf Club will open its doors on Sunday, April 7, as part of a plan to bring golf to a new audience and maybe entice a few back into the game as well.

The club is working with Sport Wellington Wairarapa to host a "Have a Go Day" at their Manuka Street, Lansdowne, headquarters where participants will receive expert skills instruction and have the chance to play a few holes as well as tour the facility and have morning tea.

"This free session is open to anyone with even a passing interest in golf, and is a great opportunity for us to showcase what we have here at the club to the broader community," said executive member Brett Gould.

"Golf is a fantastic and safe social game everyone can enjoy. The game has a marvellous handicapping system that allows everyone to participate on an equal footing regardless of their age, ability or fitness level.

"What you will find at the Masterton club is a warm welcome, an established social scene and a fantastic, well maintained course."

SWW community sport adviser Mark Curr agrees. "Golf is on a high at the moment with internationally successful players like Lydia Ko and Michael Hendry showing everyone what the game provides for men and women of all ages," he said.

"This wave of interest will hopefully expose new people to the sport and the Masterton club introductory day is a great way to start. This is a superb local sports facility, and the club has big ambitions for the future."
