Last Saturday was a very busy day at the Carterton Golf Club.
The final qualifying round of the men's championships, the first round of the women's championships and a group of 64 visitors to the club all combined to fill the course.
MEN ? SATURDAY:
The stroke round field was divided into two
groups with very low scoring the order of the day, at least for those featuring in the prize lists.
The best nett round of the day was returned by Eddie Birchall who, in winning the higher handicap group, completed his round in a nett 64.
Tom Bingham was runner-up in that group with 67 nett with Richard Chapman one shot further back in third place.
George Rink shot a nett 70, Graham Hutchby a nett 71, while Allan Heffer, Bill Shakespeare and Robert Bentley all returned nett 72's.
The low handicap group was headed by Alistair Smith with a nett 65 from Mark Graham and Mike Newport, both on 66. Adam Brunton completed a nett 67 and Aidan Konise 69.
David Ross was on his own with a nett 70 while five players ? Brian Field, Lance Sayer, Mark Childs, Daniel Schmid and Kiel Steichman ? all had nett 71's.
The Marquis of Normanby Hotel Men's Nearest the Pin was won by Grant Smith and the "All Teed Up" ball for the men by Daniel Schmid.
Men to score holes in two were Mark Childs, Chris Ranish and Alistair Smith.
CHAMPIONSHIP FIELDS:
The fields for the men's championships, in their order of qualifying, are:
Senior: Fraser Smith, Nigel Bain, Lance Sayer, Daniel Schmid, Mark Childs, Barry Bentley, Chris Ranish and Grant Smith.
Intermediate: Mike Newport, Keil Stechman, Stu Ingham, Adam Brunton, Lyn Evans, David Wills, John Lett and David Sadler.
Junior A: Dean Schaef, George Rink, Ian Gordon, Tom Bingham, Barry Hare, Ralph Day, Allan Heffer and Robert Bentley.
Junior B: Garry Spicer, Chris Connor, Frank Delaney, Richard Chapman, Graham Hutchby, Gerard Birch, Bernie O'Brien and Ash Braggins.
WOMEN ? SATURDAY:
The first round of the Women's Golf Club Championships was played last Saturday and going through to the semi-finals to be played on Saturday October 15, are:
Silver division: Lyn Andrews to play Barbara Birchall and Emma Wills to play Jeanne Taylor.
Bronze 1: Anne Brewer to play Kate Keen and Bridget Price to play Shirley Carew.
Bronze 2: Beth Gordon to play Ngaire Taylor and Mary Edwards to play Susanne Fuller.
For those women not playing in championships the competition was a stableford round in which Bernice Parker led the way with 35 points from Val Willis and Beth Gordon, both on 34 and Pauline Craig on 32.
The women's "All Teed Up" ball was won by Marion Matheson.
Holes in two were achieved by Lesley Sadler, Emma Wills, Barbara Birchall and June Prince ? who scored two of them.
SUNDAY:
A bisque par round was played on Sunday, September 25, in which George Rink won the day from John Braiden, Grant Smith, Lance Sayer, Stu Ingham and Whana Rohe. Unfortunately the results book does not record their scores. Both Russ Morgan and Fraser Smith scored holes in two.
VETERANS ? WEDNESDAY:
Three matches in the Captains' Trophy were completed on Tuesday, September 27, and, as a result the semi finals will be:
Ray White and Jack Jones will play Ralph Day and Ian Brinkworth while Bernie O'Brien and Trevor Clayton will play Jim Juno and Mike Newport.
In the stableford round, also played on the day, Pat Carew won with an impressive 42 point score.
Pat not only won his choice of the meat prizes but also took out the grocery voucher jackpot.
Ralph Day, in second place only one point behind Pat, just failed to keep the voucher jackpot alive.
Jim Douglas took third slot with 40, while four players ? Bob Walker, Bernie O'Brien, Hugh Rolls and Arie van Zanten ? all returned 39 point totals.
WOMEN ? WEDNESDAY:
Round 5 of the Coyle Cup, a par round, was played on Wednesday, September 21.
Vicki Bain had the day's best round, her 4 up score winning the silver division.
Second in that division was Nadine Jansen who finished 1 up.
The bronze division was won by Marion Matheson, with a 2 up score, from Mary Edwards, 1 up, and Sue Braiden, square.
The "All Teed Up" ball for the day was won by Vicki Bain while holes in two were recorded by Nadine Jansen, who got two of them, Val Willis, Vicki Bain, Corrie van Zanten and Marion Matheson.
FOOTNOTE:
Last Saturday, as we were on the tenth tee, a group of visitors, who were obviously having a very good time, were teeing off on the adjacent fifteenth tee.
Also teeing off on the nearby thirteenth tee were another group of visitors, also obviously enjoying themselves.
There was considerable banter, all good natured, between the two groups and some of the players in my four also joined in.
As they proceeded past our tee one of the visitors apologised for the noise and explained that it was all the fault of one James Beam!
