The New Zealand Nurses Organisation hailed the appointment as "good news for the health sector".
"Mr Chuah brings continuity and stability in leadership and a wealth of experience from his many previous roles in health," chief executive Memo Musa said.
"We are pleased to be able to continue our good working relationship with him and commend him for his ongoing interest and attention to matters of importance to nurses and the nursing profession.
