A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said they are working with police on evacuations from affected properties.
Firefighters were alerted to a fast-moving grass fire threatening homes in Springvale, just outside Clyde, about 3.25pm.
“Thirteen crews from around the area are responding supported by four helicopters,” the fire and emergency spokesperson said.
“Another five crews are on their way.”
Two helicopters are at the scene and the spokesperson said the blaze had grown to 400m by 400m at 4pm.
Springvale Rd has been closed because the fire has jumped across it.
The smoke from the fire is drifting towards Alexandria, according to Fire and Emergency, and people in the vicinity of the smoke have been advised to stay indoors with windows closed.
Members of the public have also been advised to not undertake any hot works such as welding, grinding and lawn mowing because fire and emergency have put a large number of resources into containing the grass fire.
“Fire and Emergency also asks the public to please stay away from the area so firefighters can do their job to contain the fire.”
When a vegetation fire was on the same road two weeks ago, residents were told at the time to prepare for an evacuation.
However, it was nearly out when crews arrived, despite having spread into nearby pine trees.
More to come.
