Census forms awaited

Anyone who has yet to return census forms has until April 10 to do so.

"After April 10, Statistics New Zealand begins processing data collected in the 2013 census. We will also begin the process of considering taking action against those who have not completed their census obligations," Government Statistician Geoff Bascand said.

"Everyone who was in New Zealand on census night on March 5 is required by law to complete a 2013 census form. So far Statistics NZ has collected well in excess of five million census forms (individual and dwelling forms combined) and we are now in our final few days of collecting outstanding forms.

"If your completed census forms are still sitting at home, please post them back now.

"You can phone 0800 CENSUS (0800 236 787) and ask for a freepost envelope to post them back in. Call the 0800 number if you need forms or any other help."

Warning or prosecuting people for failing to complete census forms was a last resort, Mr Bascand said.

"Census information is used in ways that affect everyone, from the location of schools, decisions on public transport and roads, to the rebuild of Christchurch. It's important that everyone who was in New Zealand on census night fills in a census form so that the best information possible is available.

"Statistics NZ will not share any personal information with any government department, individual or private organisation."

Completed census forms can be posted back to 2013 Census, Private Bag 208 040, Highbrook, Auckland.
