Cattle truck crash victim named

A 48-year-old cattle truck driver killed when his truck and trailer rolled on State Highway 1 north of Kaikoura last night has been named.

John William Johnston, 48, of Maheno, was driving north about 7.55pm when his truck crossed the centre line and left the road before rolling and colliding with a power line at Parikawa, 50km north of Kaikoura, Constable Dean Schroder said.

Several cattle had to be put down and power was cut to houses from Parikawa to Waipapa Bay.

Inquiries were continuing into the accident.
