Catch limit causes job losses for fishermen

A cut in the commercial catch limit for hoki means 78 New Zealand fishermen, many from Nelson, will lose their jobs.

The Japanese seafood company Nissui is tying up its factory freezer trawler Taharaki, which has fished for hoki using quota owned by Nelson-based Sealord Group.

Nissui last year bought a joint 50 per cent stake in Sealord with the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission.

The deal was promoted as good for Sealord, with the promise of 700 jobs in the next five years.

Sealord says those jobs will still be created.
